Published: Thursday 27th August 2020

An organization’s management is distributed among several levels: horizontal, vertical and diagonal. Depending on the scale of a company the communication, management and operation between such different sections of employees can be a complex task like a spider web’s intricate network. In order to have an organization working smoothly, every cluster of employees is divided into different departments so there can be better inter and intra departmental functioning. One such a department is known as the Human Resource department, which is responsible to manage the most precious resource an organization can have, human input. From a janitor to a top-level sales executive, all are monitored and cared for by the Human Resource department.

Since the top-level management and owners of an organization cannot humanly interact with each and every employee on a regular basis, the HR department is the one to keep a connection actively established. They keep relations between the employers, employees and labour unions running smoothly to provide maximum input and profitability.

If you are interested in pursuing a career as an HR official, you need to understand the function of the human resource department in an organization. Below, you will find a list of the top 5 functions of HR that helps to run an organization like a well-oiled machine:

  • Staffing: Perhaps the most important Human Resources department’s function is tasked with is to find the right people for the jobs available in an organization. This includes conducting several rounds of profile screening, interviews and negotiations to find the right candidate to contribute to the growth of their company. Finding a great candidate within the organization’s budget takes efforts like posting job advertisements, campus recruitments and more.
  • Training And Development: Every now and then, new technologies, systems and changes in management make an appearance in an organization. To be able to move with changing times while being productive and profitable, the employees need constant training and development programs to keep them updated with the latest advancements in technology and laws. This process takes extensive planning and arrangements of time-slots, batches and running such training programs successfully.
  • Creating A Safe Work Environment For All: Another important function of the HR is to create a save workspace for all employees involved. This means that the organization stays free from corruption, bias, internal bullying and harassment. The safety of women employees at work, too, falls upon the shoulders of the Human Resources department. Workplace safety also includes on-site labourer safety and protection from injuries on duty. They are responsible for framing appropriate policies and dealing with employee grievances effectively. The function of HR is to ensure that each employee feels safe while giving their best.
  • Compliance With Labor Law: The HR specialists are well-versed with the Labour Law compliance, since failure to do so may result in an increase of employee dissatisfaction with working conditions, workplace safety and compensatory grievances. The human Resources department needs to be aware of all the important Labour Laws that directly impact the progress and operations of their organization.
  • Payment of Salary, Compensation, and Benefits: While the payment of salary is handled by one HR specialist, the compensation and benefits section is handled by another. Both are vital to the organization since paying employees on time, handling their compensation and benefits directly affect the productivity of the human resources. From creating a compensation and benefits package as well as a salary package to implementing policies that smoothly transition payments to retiring or laid-off employees, the HR department is responsible to act swiftly. The payroll component of the HR functions also needs to be established and administered along with any employee savings funds created by the organization.

Since the HR is the bridge between the employer and employee, it is their duty to help create an open workspace where communication is regular, and issues are resolved as quickly as possible.
