Job description
As Head of Technical Operations, your day to day responsibilities will be to oversee all computational delivery and support activities as they relate to the film VFX division with oversight of Mumbai film operations. You will report directly to the CTO, VFX and will be a member of the core senior technology management team (OCTO). You will occupy a key leadership role working closely with the production teams to ensure that their needs are properly resourced, and that delivery of those resources is maintained in a consistent, predictable and efficient manner. Your team will be comprised of the HOD’s for Systems Support, Desktop, Render Wrangling and Data Operations who all perform Level 1 response activities. You will also have a set of direct reports in Senior Systems roles to provide Level 2 support escalation and to liaise with the technology domains as they research, develop, test and implement advanced technologies to further strengthen the overall Framestore infrastructure.

As a leader, you will be responsible for ensuring that the training and skills development activities relating to your team are kept up to date with industry standards and are in line with the business requirements of Framestore.

Key Responsibilities:- Provide technical leadership, supervision and mentoring to the senior technical members of the systems group and the systems development team

  • Research, design and communicate (both verbally and in writing) the primary direction and strategic road-map for IT systems (including networks, servers, critical services, storage)
  • Creation of technical documentation for systems teams using flow charts, sequence diagrams etc to guide the implementation planning of proposed designs. Implement proof of concept for technical projects
  • Liaise with development teams and client departments ensuring their needs are met as a result of the proposed architecture
  • Come up with innovative ideas to improve efficiency and satisfy technical requirements within the best possible price/performance ratio
  • Investigate, research and evaluate external suppliers and propose optimum solutions based on cost/benefit analysis between internally developed and off the shelf solutions. Maintain an awareness of latest relevant technology developments and current budgetary constraints
  • Drive performance metrics and champion benchmarking. Work with technical teams and external suppliers to ensure evaluation of equipment is balanced and informed
  • Advise and support implementation of large technical projects
  • Organise relevant technical training and motivational events to maintain optimum team skills and efficiency as required
  • Provide input into the budgeting process for VFX and core infrastructure capex
  • Build on and improve the effectiveness of the systems team and support the global head of support as he manages the support response side of the technical team – implement processes for improving and standardizing best practice where possible (. phone answering targets, backup regimes, intra-team training)
  • Represent the company at relevant external events (. conferences, trade shows), and with relevant suppliers as required
  • Involvement in advising for the recruitment of senior systems administrators and systems developers
  • Across the group, provide research and technical liaison between countries and divisions. Where possible, share knowledge and facilitate communication

Job requirements
Essential Skills:- A strong leader with good analytical, organisation and communication skills and a strong ability to provide positive influence across all levels of Framestore business

  • A proactive leadership style coupled with a client-focused approach to service
  • Ability to lead, motivate and support the systems engineering team towards shared goals and responsibilities
  • Ability to solve problems as they arise and remain calm in a fast-paced and highly pressurised environment
  • Ability to manage conflicting demands and demonstrate flexibility and tact in resolution
  • Ability to quickly understand the needs of the business and respond accordingly
  • Experience in managing performance and appraising productivity
  • A strong knowledge of the specialised systems utilised in the VFX and/or HPC industries
  • Minimum 8 years hands on experience maintaining a large computational estate
  • A solid grounding in core technologies such as the TCP/IP protocols, Active Directory, database configuration and administration, and high performance storage concepts
